NALCHIK, February 28 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Saturday met with President of Russia’s republic of Kabardino-Balkaria Arsen Kanokov to discuss the social and economic situation in the republic.

According to the Kabardino-Balkarian president, the republic’s budget grew threefold in the past five years. “In 2005 we started with the budget of seven billion roubles and in 2009 reached some 20 billion,” he said.

As the republic’s budget went up, government subsidies were brought down. “We started with some 64.7 percent subsidies and in 2010 the amount of subsidies is 45-46 percent,” Kanokov stressed. In his words, these results were achieved mainly through agricultural development.

According to Kanokov, unemployment rate in the republic decreased by 6,000 in 2009. “As of the beginning of 2009, a total of 26,000 (jobless) were registered, while at the beginning of 2010 – 20,000,” he said, adding that there were some 8,000 vacancies in the republic.

President Medvedev stressed the importance to further support the region’s agro-industrial sector, saying “it was the only sector showing growth.”
