Three or Four New Airports Planned to be Built in the North Caucasus
Regnum - January 12, 2010
“The number of passengers passing through the airports in the North Caucasus will increase up to forty thousand a day by 2018 which means that the airports in the region must be modernized and expanded,” concluded the report, "Resorts of the North Caucasus." The increase in the air traffic will be due to the new investments in the region’s tourism industry.
The report identified the airports to be modernized as Krasnodar in Krasnodar Territory, Maikop in Adygeya, Makhachkala in Daghestan, Mineralnye Vody in Stavropol Territory, Nalchik in Kabardino-Balkaria and Vladikavkaz in North Ossetia – Alania. It is expected that the programme will create multi-functional airfield complexes in the North Caucasus that are capable of serving the majority of both Russian and foreign-made aircraft types for passenger and cargo services.
Furthermore, new airports are being planned to be built in the ski resorts of Zelenchuk in Karachay-Cherkessia, Mamison in North Ossetia-Alania and Matlase in Daghestan. Another one may be built in the Daghestani city of Derbent for the tourists who would want to relax on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
Let us remind you that the first ski resort to be renovated in the North Caucasus’ Alpine cluster will be Arkhyz in Karachay-Cherkessia.
